Code of Conduct

1. Purpose

This Code applies to players, parents and carers, coaches, officials, volunteers, staff and spectators. It supports a safe, inclusive and respectful environment where everyone can enjoy basketball and develop.

2. Players

• Treat teammates, opponents, coaches, officials and spectators with respect.
• Listen to coaching instructions, work safely and use equipment properly.
• Play fairly, control your language and behaviour, and report bullying or unsafe conduct.
• Tell a coach about injuries, illness, medication or anything affecting safe participation.

3. Parents, carers and spectators

• Encourage effort, learning and sportsmanship without putting undue pressure on players.
• Respect coaches, officials, opponents and other families.
• Do not coach from the sideline, use abusive language or challenge officials aggressively.
• Collect young people promptly and keep emergency and medical information current.
• Raise welfare concerns through the safeguarding contacts rather than on social media.

4. Coaches, staff and volunteers

• Put participant welfare first and follow Basketball England safeguarding requirements.
• Maintain professional boundaries and age-appropriate communication.
• Provide inclusive, planned and safe activities and respond properly to injuries or concerns.
• Never promise confidentiality where a safeguarding concern must be reported.

5. Photography and digital communication

Images of children are used only where appropriate permission has been obtained. Club communication with young players follows the club’s safeguarding arrangements and normally includes a parent or carer where required.

6. Breaches and concerns

Concerns are handled proportionately under the club’s safeguarding or disciplinary arrangements. Possible action includes guidance, a warning, suspension or ending membership. Safeguarding matters may be referred to Basketball England, statutory services or the police.
